Losing a tooth — or facing the prospect of losing one — is never straightforward. There are practical concerns, aesthetic ones, and often an emotional dimension that doesn’t always get talked about. At London Holistic Dental Centre, we think that the way a dental implant is planned, placed, and restored matters just as much as the implant itself.
Here is our approach: why we take the time we do, what choices we offer, and what makes our perspective on implant dentistry genuinely different.
Our approach to dental implants means we don’t look at the gap in your mouth in isolation. We look at you — your overall health, your bone quality, your bite, your gum health, any habits or medications that could affect healing, and what you’re hoping for long term.
It also means the materials we recommend are chosen with your body in mind, not just their technical performance. And it means we believe in taking the time to explain your options properly, so that when a decision is made, it’s one you genuinely understand and feel comfortable with.
At London Holistic Dental Centre, dental implant placement is carried out by Dr Sami Sherif, a Specialist Prosthodontist who completed a five-year full-time specialist residency at the prestigious Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he earned a Doctorate of Medical Sciences (DMedSc) in Oral Biology. He qualified in dentistry from Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals, University of London, and has since lectured internationally and contributed to peer-reviewed research in implant dentistry.
Prosthodontics is the specialty that covers implants, aesthetic dentistry, and full-mouth reconstructive work — it is, in other words, exactly the right background for the most complex and consequential work in dentistry.
Having a specialist of this level working within the practice means that your treatment is planned and delivered with the full picture in mind — the placement, the restoration, the aesthetics, and the long-term function — all considered together from the very beginning.
One of the questions we hear most often is: should I have a titanium or a zirconia implant?
It’s a genuinely important question, and we don’t think there’s a single right answer that applies to everyone. Both materials have a strong clinical track record, and both can be excellent choices depending on your individual circumstances.
Titanium has decades of research behind it. It is highly biocompatible, integrates exceptionally well with bone — a process called osseointegration — and remains the most widely used implant material in the world. For the vast majority of patients, it is a safe, reliable, and well-evidenced option.
Zirconia — also known as ceramic — contains no metallic components, making it a popular choice for patients who prefer to avoid traditional metals in the body, those with known sensitivities, or anyone with strong personal preferences around materials. Zirconia implants have a natural tooth-like colour, which can be especially useful in areas where the gum tissue is thin.
We offer both, and we don’t advocate for one over the other as a blanket recommendation. What we do advocate for is a proper conversation — one that takes into account your health history, your anatomy, your aesthetic goals, and your personal preferences. That conversation always happens before any plan is made.
Every implant case begins with a thorough assessment. This includes a review of your dental and medical history, an examination of the site, and where appropriate, a CBCT scan to evaluate the available bone in three dimensions.
From there, we discuss your options — which implant type is most suitable, whether any preparatory treatment is needed, and what the final restoration will look like once the implant has integrated.
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthesia. For patients who feel anxious about treatment, dental sedation is available, allowing you to be deeply relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the experience is either way.
There is then a healing period during which the implant integrates with the surrounding bone. The final crown, bridge, or retained prosthetic is crafted by a skilled dental laboratory to your individual specifications, ensuring a result that looks and feels completely natural.
Throughout your treatment, you are supported by the same team — the same faces, the same practice, the same ethos.
Dental implants are suitable for most healthy adults who have lost one or more teeth and have adequate bone to support them. Factors such as active gum disease, certain medical conditions, or smoking can affect outcomes, and these are all things we assess carefully and discuss openly.
If you have been told elsewhere that implants may not be suitable for you, it is always worth a second opinion. We take the time to review each case properly rather than applying blanket criteria.
At London Holistic Dental Centre, we have always believed that the mouth does not exist separately from the rest of the body. Oral health is connected to cardiovascular health, immune function, bone density, and more. This is especially relevant when it comes to implants.
Before treatment begins, we want to understand the full picture. If there are underlying factors — nutritional, systemic, or lifestyle-related — that could affect healing or long-term success, we would rather identify and address them early than ignore them in favour of moving quickly.
It takes a little more time. We think it’s worth it.
If you are considering dental implants and would like to understand your options properly, we would be glad to see you.
